Clinical Psychologist
I am a bilingual, licensed psychologist in California and New York, fluent in English and Cantonese, and proficient in Mandarin. My clinical practice is grounded in a commitment to culturally responsive, evidence-based care for children, adolescents, and adults, with experience spanning hospital, community, and private practice settings.

I completed my doctoral training in Clinical Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology, Alliant International University, where my research focused on trauma and its impact on children with adverse childhood experiences. My education also includes a Master of Science in Education in Psychological Services from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Educational Studies from Washington University in St. Louis. I hold additional post-master’s training in counseling and have completed specialized coursework in neuropsychological assessment and trauma-focused interventions, including EMDR.

My clinical experience includes serving as a psychologist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, where I provide comprehensive neurodevelopmental and neuropsychological assessments for pediatric patients with complex medical needs. As founder of Dr. Kan Psychological Services Inc., I offer psychotherapy and psychological evaluations for clients across the lifespan, integrating modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and Solution-Focused Therapy. My work is informed by a deep respect for each client’s cultural background and individual strengths.

Previously, I completed a postdoctoral residency in adult and child psychiatry at Kaiser Permanente and a pre-doctoral internship at the California Medical Facility’s psychiatric inpatient program, where I provided acute and intermediate mental health care in a forensic setting. My practicum training included specialized rotations in neuropsychology, autism spectrum disorders, and ADHD, as well as general outpatient mental health for adults and families. I have also worked in community mental health and substance use treatment programs, providing individual, group, and family therapy, as well as crisis intervention and case management.

In addition to clinical practice, I have contributed to the training of future psychologists as an adjunct faculty member and clinical supervisor, and have presented at professional conferences on topics including trauma, minority mental health, and immigrant family adaptation. My approach is collaborative, holistic, and rooted in the belief that effective psychological care addresses the complex interplay of cognitive, emotional, social, and cultural factors in each individual’s life.
As a first-generation immigrant from Hong Kong, I bring a bicultural perspective to my work, complemented by fluency in Cantonese and English and proficiency in Mandarin. These personal experiences provide me with a nuanced understanding of the unique challenges faced by immigrants, international students, non-resident employees, and persons of color. This background deeply informs my commitment to providing culturally responsive care and allows me to build meaningful connections with clients from diverse communities.

With over 20 years of clinical experience, I am dedicated to supporting individuals and families as they navigate complex life transitions, acculturation, parenting, and caregiver-related stress. My therapeutic approach is fundamentally relational and strength-based; I focus on identifying and enhancing a client’s inherent resilience, empowering them to face life’s challenges with renewed confidence and clarity.

Beyond my clinical practice, I am an active volunteer within my local community, particularly in supporting arts and music education at my children’s schools. This has included facilitating the "Art in Action" program during their elementary years and supporting music programs at both the high school and middle school levels. Currently, I serve as President of the music boosters club at my younger son’s school, where I advocate for music enrichment and oversee fundraising initiatives. My community involvement also extends to youth sports, where I have spent several years volunteering with the Dublin Little League as a team parent, scorekeeper, and in field preparation. Whether in my professional practice or through my community service, I strive to foster supportive, inclusive environments that promote growth and connection for all.
